Hello everyone,
We meet today for our little weekly meeting around literature. It has been a few years since Dreamcatcher is in my library without my taking it out, despite a strong attraction. Looking back, I tell myself that I was a little afraid to read this little block, especially because of everything I had heard about thefilm adaptation. I know, there isn't much to do with it, but my brain had made up its mind. I still took my courage in both hands and I embarked on this story of the master of horror. Get ready, we are heading into the Maine forest for a rather special hunting party. In the heart of the forest of Derry, four childhood friends, united for better or for worse, confronted with a terrifying phenomenon which they are not likely to forget… Bookish NanardI will not go there by four ways, but Dreamcatcher by Stephen King is very confusing. He is as good and bad as a cinematographic girl can be ... However, the story is gripping, interesting and we feel that the plot is much more complex, as Stephen King knows very well how to do, but there is a je ne sais quoi that does not pass… What immediately marks with Dreamcatcheris this desire that Stephen King has to reveal too many themes to us in a single story. It's simple, Dreamcatcher can easily make four different novels, if we only deal with one theme. Here, Stephen King takes up his favorite themes, namely childhood, friendship, coming of age, alcoholism, beliefs, telekinesis and much more. If on paper the idea gives you desire, it is a little less the case once the book is in front of you. Stephen King seems to have vomited this book, he regurgitated everything he could see, read and hear in recent years, in order to offer us this Dreamcatcher. This novel contains references everywhere and especially to many things that have nothing in common: Alien, Apocalypse Now, X-Files, X-Men or even certain events of the Second World War. The quill is of lower quality than usual and it reinforces the feeling of throwing up your book and your thoughts. This is not a trivial idea and sensation, since Dreamcatcher is the first novel Stephen King wrote following his very serious accident, which left him with a near-death experience. Besides, the author talks a lot about a similar accident in history. We must therefore see this Dreamcatcher as therapy for the author. There is like too much inventiveness in this story and this is what can force-feed its reader. The beginning of the novel is quite unsettling, since we cannot expect the rest of this story and that is the strength of this novel, it is unpredictable. Dreamcatcher has its share of funny scenes, gore, even scato and do not forget to make us feel a lot of emotions with the character of Duddits. As often Stephen King will play on a multitude of temporalities and points of view, in order to show us a multitude of events. I'm going to repeat myself again, but Stephen King is really a genius for developing his characters and his themes. The four characters are funny, endearing, while each having a weakness. I'm not even talking about Duddits which is heartwarming and I don't forget Commander Kurtz who shows all the human madness, while much worse is going on in this forest. You will understand, Stephen King delivers here an outlet novel that may leave more than one on the side of the road. By wanting to do too much, the master of horror seems to get lost in his universe which is nevertheless very interesting. Once again, the author does not forget to anchor his story in his universe, in particular with some references to the city of Derry, but especially to the club of failures and Pennywise. With this story Stephen King continues to show us that an element can come to disturb our daily life and that it is in this kind of situation that the worst of Humanity can emerge, so that we wonder who is the most dangerous in this story. And if you want to know a little more about Stephen King and his news, I invite you to visit the Stephen King Club.
